Our Emerald Artichoke

The EMERALD ARTICHOKE seed produces a thornless, glossy, buttery flavored artichoke for home gardeners, landscapers, nurseries and florists. Kurupas Enterprises is the breeder of the Emerald Artichoke. We are a family owned farming operation, located in Southern California's Imperial Valley. The Emerald Artichoke is one of only two seed varieties patented in the United States.

Better Homes and Gardens had an article in their April 2000 issue on artichokes being grown in Minnesota. Our Emerald Artichoke has been proven by the Cooperative Extension of the University of California to tolerate extreme temperatures down to 20 degrees F. In our experience we have seen the plants survive temperatures as low as 15 degrees F. ground level. The Emerald Artichoke needs little or no vernalization. In short the Emerald Artichoke has been adapted to grow anywhere. We are confident that there is no place that our artichoke cannot be grown given proper planting timing and growing environment.

Until now our seed has only been available to commercial farmers through Corona Seed. We are excited to be able to offer the finest tasting, thornless artichoke to all home gardeners. The retail price of an artichoke is generally $2.00-$3.00 each. One healthy plant of the Emerald Artichoke in your garden should produce on the average up to 18 edible artichokes. Each package of seed ordered includes complete planting instructions, fertilization tips for organic or commercial fertilizing. Please contact us at emeraldartichoke@thegrid.net if you have any questions.

For a minimal investment nurseries can grow the Emerald Artichoke by seed and sell the plants at a profitable price. Landscapers are always looking for new and unique perennials to use. Artichoke plants have been used to create beautiful landscaping designs. This eye-catching perennial can be found in the landscape of Disneyland in Anaheim, CA. If left on the plant the buds bloom into a vibrant purple flower. Florists and home gardeners can use these blooms to create unique fresh and dried flower arrangements.

Here in the United States we are discovering why the European diet includes the artichoke in many of their recipes. This vegetable provides high fiber, 100-mg potassium, 78-mg sodium, 3 g. protein, 6 g. carbohydrates, is a good source of vitamins A, B, and C, is rich in iodine and has 0 g. of fat. The artichoke has also become a popular vegetable because of its many uses in recipes and diets. Check out our cooking instructions and latest recipe!
